To understand what my title means one should understand that we, humans are made of two different components. We have a Body and a Ruh (English translation: soul), Body made of dirt and soil and Ruh is the special light delivered within our mother’s womb by angels following Allah’s commandment. When a women enters the 120th day (4 months) of  her pregnancy, Allah SWT sends down an angel to write down four things: He is ordered to write down his (i.e. the new creature’s) deeds, his livelihood, his (date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into him (Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 4, Book 54, Number 430)

The majesty of Allah is such that He created Ruh of every single one of Adam’s progeny,  long before he made the bodies and gathered us all as our Ruh’s minus the body and took a covenant form us. Every single one of us agreed that Allah is our creator and gave him the covenant that we wont be setting up rivals against Him and bore witness to him as our creator (Surah # 7, Verse # 172).  And what did we do when the Ruh was deposited into our respective bodies? We deny Allah as being our creator and we question His presence?

We spend a BIG portion of our life running after worldly needs and trying our best to fulfil bodily needs and wants. We invest so much of our time and efforts into quenching our bodily desires and needs that we completely ignore to feed and strengthen the other component of our creation – our Ruh! We end up dehydrating and weakening our Ruh, thereby leading many of us to question Allah and His presence. ‘How do you know that there is a God?’, ‘Prove to me that there is but a God!’ – could perhaps be the best philosophical and atheist questions; the answer to which is one simple fact – But, You all did know .. All of us bore witness to this fact a long time ago. The only crucial difference being that you forgot!

Ramadhan is that magnificent month when we actually cater to the needs of our Ruh and nourish it. Since Ruh was created by Allah and delivered to us by Allah, Allah also provided with the proper nourishment for our Ruh – The Quran. Notice the amazing coincidence that Allah SWT arranged for the food for our Ruh to be delivered to us for the first time in the same month of Ramadhan, This was the month when Quran was revealed to the mankind. We restrain ourself from fulfilling the bodily needs during Ramadhan, giving us an excellent opportunity to devote time and attention to nourish and strengthen our Ruh inshallah. Therefore, Tarawee is a crucial component of Ramadhan where the recitation of Quran, its understanding enriches our Ruh and our faith in Allah SWT.

May Allah help us make the best out of this month and ease our sorrow and pain and grant us happiness and peace. Ameen

Collected and written below are some of the ways through which few sins can be expatiated against. These dua’s confirm to the fact that Islam is the easiest religion to follow, wherein a person having committed a sea full of sins still is given a hope of entering Jannah (Paradise) by reciting a few Quranic verses or dua’s with heart-felt regret , shame and Imaan (faith) in Allah’s promise.
Please note that this is a continuation of my earlier post on actions that may help in forgiveness of sins committed by a person. And that Kafaarah translates to expatiation.

Kaffaarah for committing sexual intercourse while fasting in Ramadhan: Narrated by Abu Hurairah R.A.A: ‘While we were sitting with the prophet S.A.S a man came and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! I have been ruined.’ Prophet S.A.S asked what was the matter with him. He replied ‘I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting’ Prophet S.A.S asked him, ‘Can you afford to manumit a slave?’ He replied in negative. Prophet S.A.S then asked ‘ Can you fast for two consecutive months?’ He replied in negative. The Prophet S.A.S asked ‘ Can you afford to feed 60 poor people?’ He replied in negative again. The Prophet S.A.S remained silent for a while and while he was in his stake, a big basket full of dates was brought to Prophet S.A.S. He asked ‘Where is the questioner?’ He replied, ‘I am here’. The Prophet S.A.S said ‘Take this and give in charity’. The man said ‘Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between Madinah’s two mountains who are poorer than I’. The Prophet S.A.S smiled and replied, ‘Feed your family with it’. (Bukhari)

Kaffaraah of Zihar: Narrated by Khuwalyah, daughter of Malik bin Tha’labah R.A.A: ‘My husband Aws bin As-Samit pronounced the words: ‘You are like a mother to me’. So I came to the Porphet S.A.S complaining to him about my husband. The Messenger of Allah S.A.S disputed with me and said ‘Remain dutiful to Allah, he is your cousin’. I continued complaining until the Quranic verse came down : Allah has heard the words of her who disputes with you concerning her husband .. (Al-Mujaadalah (58):1) till the prescription of expaition. He then said, ‘He should set a slave free’. She said, ‘He cannot afford it’.He then said, ‘He should fast for two consecutive months’. She said, ‘Messenger of Allah S.A.S he is an old man; he cannot keep fasts. he said ‘He should then feed sixty poor people’. She said, ‘He has nothing with which he may give in alms’. At that moment an Araq (basket containing sixty Sa’s of dates) was brought to him. I said, ‘I shall help him with another date-basket. He said ‘You have done well. Go and feed sixty poor people on his behalf and return to your cousin’. (Abu Dawood)

Kaffarah for Violating Hajj: Allah S.W.T says: ‘And perform properly, the Hajj and the Umrah for Allah, But if you are prevented (from completing them), sacrifice a Hady(animal i.e. sheep, a cow, a camel etc) such as you can afford, and do not shave your heads until the Hady reaches the place of sacrifice. And whoever of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp (necessiating shaving), he must pay a Fidyah (ransom) of either observing Sawm (fast – three days) or giving Sadaqah (charity – feeding 6 poor people) or offering sacrifice (one sheep)…’. (Al-Baraqah (2):196)

Kafaarah of hunting while in Ihram or sacred places: Allah says: O you who believe! Kill not game when you are in a state of Ihram for Hajj or Umrah and whoever of you kills it intentionally, the penalty is offering, brought to Ka’bah of an eatable animal equivalent to the one he killed as adjusted by two just men among you; for expiation, he should feed Muskimeen or its equivalent in Sawmm that he may taste the heaviness (punishment) of his deed. Allah has forgiven what is past, but whoever commits it again; Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is All-Mighty, All Able Of Retribution‘ (Al-Maa’idah (5):95)

Allah S.W.T is great, the most merciful and bountiful. May Allah help safeguard us all against shaitan’s ill whisperings and his plots and make us all do deeds acceptable of Islam and follow the path described in Quran and followed by Prophet S.A.S. Ameen.

This Ramadhan, I yet again set a goal to learn some Surah’s inshallah (as time permits). In old times, Sahabi’s used to recite lengthy surah’s in their prayers, rather than shorter ones as we now-a-days do. We cannot learn such lengthy ones, but the least we could do is make sure than we learn some surah’s every year, and what better time than in Ramadhan ?

So, Inshallah This year I plan to learn Surah Ma’un (107) ; Surah Fi’l (105) ; Surah Humazah (104) ; Surah Takathu’r (102) and Surah Qari’ah (101) and if possible more (Although I confess I have grown insanely busy..!!! I will try my BEST inshallah and so should you all) . I would like to write the way I do this, for some may find it quite interesting and would prefer to try it, if you decide to do the same(i.e learning Quran).

Long back my teacher in Arabic advised me to learn Quran with meaning, ‘It would help you understand better what you learn and also to recollect easily through the meaning, if in case you happen to forget the verse/word’ he would say in his shaky voice. I still live by that advise and memorize Quran with meaning alhamdulillah. I came across this knowledgeable site which has word by word translation of each verse of each surah (May Allah reward them, who work so much for people like us.Ameen)

First Make an Intention in your heart and Ask for Allah’s assistance to help memorize the Quran

Start off by reading a verse and check back on word by word translation in whichever language you are comfortable with. (The site has already mentioned above, Click on the pdf file to view the translation)

If a Verse is too big, Divide it accordingly and memorize it. But do remember to add those divided parts and learn a verse as a whole too. For Memorization the best way is to repeat a verse 4-5 times or more till you are comfortable with words and its pronounciation.

There’s no Hurry. Take your time getting comfortable with the Arabic words. Move it along your mind till you acclimatise with it. Remember: The work of Haste is always prompted by Satan.

Learn each verse separately and then read joining them altogether. Doing so is encouraged after every other verse i.e. After learning two individual verses, recite them together; Then again learn two more verses and then recite all four verses altogether.

If, facing a problem in figuring out the correct pronunciation of a particular verse, Refer here and listen to the recitation of that particular verse/word.

Once you feel you have completely memorized the whole Surah, Read/repeat it as many times as you can. Read that in your prayer, see whether you recollect each and every word/verse. If not, Check back and refresh your memory.

♦ Subhanallah ! Allah shall help you and May Allah reward us all for our efforts and deeds. Ameen.

After a Long wait, The Autumn Issue of SISTERS Magazine is soon going to hit stands this week. Grab it afresh or peek a look at it. I will be adding a sample of this Issue too inshallah (a PDF file), just as I did to the previous one. The Magazine looks simply beautiful yet again if the cover if anything to go by. The reason I am so enthusiastic about this issue is to read the goodness of Ramadhan and the Fruits of Our Faith (as advertised) .. through SISTERS Lips.
