Narrated Aisha R.A.A, The mother of faithful believers: The commencement of the divine revelations to Allah’s Messenger S.A.S was in the form of good righteous (true) dreams which came true like bright daylight, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion n the cave of Hira where he used to worship (Allah Alone) continuously for many nights before returning to his family. He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come home back to his wife Khadija to take his food likewise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The prophet S.A.S replied, ‘I do not know how to read’.

The prophet S.A.S added, ‘ Then the angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, ‘ I do not know how to read’. Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second  time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and asked me again to read but I again replied, ‘I do not know how to read’. Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me and then released me and said, ‘Read in the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists). Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most generous,(V.96:1-3). Then Allah Messenger S.A.S returned with the revelation and his heart beating severely. Then he came to Khadijah bint khuwalid R.A.A and said, ‘Cover me! Cover me!’ They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told khadijah R.A.A everything that happened (And said), I fear that something may happen to me’. Khadijah replied, ‘ Nerver! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones.’

Khadijah R.A.A then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin Abdul Uzza, who during the period of ignorance became a christian and used to write the writings with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadijah said to Waraqa,’Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!’ Waraqa said, ‘O my nephew, what have you seen?’ Allah’s Messenger described whatever he had seen. Warqa said, ‘This is the same one(angel, i.e. Jibril) whom Allah has sent to Musa. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out’. Allah’s Messenger asked, ‘Will they drive me out?’ Waraqa replied in affirmative and added, ‘Anyone who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day then I would support you strongly,. But after a few days Waraqa died and the divine revelations was also paused for a while.

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah Al-Ansari while talking about the period of pause in revelation, reported the speech of the prophet S.A.S. While i was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw the same angel, who had visited me at the cave of Hira, sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I got scared of him and came back home and said, ‘Wrap me(in a blanket).’ And then Allah revealed the following Holy verses of Quran: ‘O you(Muhammad S.A.S) envoled(in garments)! Arise and warn … (upto you) and keep away from Ar-Rujz(the idols)! {V.74:1-5}. After this the revelations started coming strongly and frequently in succession one after the other. (Sahih Al Bukhari, #3 &4).

Collected and written below are some of the ways through which few sins can be expatiated against. These dua’s confirm to the fact that Islam is the easiest religion to follow, wherein a person having committed a sea full of sins still is given a hope of entering Jannah (Paradise) by reciting a few Quranic verses or dua’s with heart-felt regret , shame and Imaan (faith) in Allah’s promise.
Please note that this is a continuation of my earlier post on actions that may help in forgiveness of sins committed by a person. And that Kafaarah translates to expatiation.

Kaffaarah for committing sexual intercourse while fasting in Ramadhan: Narrated by Abu Hurairah R.A.A: ‘While we were sitting with the prophet S.A.S a man came and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! I have been ruined.’ Prophet S.A.S asked what was the matter with him. He replied ‘I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting’ Prophet S.A.S asked him, ‘Can you afford to manumit a slave?’ He replied in negative. Prophet S.A.S then asked ‘ Can you fast for two consecutive months?’ He replied in negative. The Prophet S.A.S asked ‘ Can you afford to feed 60 poor people?’ He replied in negative again. The Prophet S.A.S remained silent for a while and while he was in his stake, a big basket full of dates was brought to Prophet S.A.S. He asked ‘Where is the questioner?’ He replied, ‘I am here’. The Prophet S.A.S said ‘Take this and give in charity’. The man said ‘Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between Madinah’s two mountains who are poorer than I’. The Prophet S.A.S smiled and replied, ‘Feed your family with it’. (Bukhari)

Kaffaraah of Zihar: Narrated by Khuwalyah, daughter of Malik bin Tha’labah R.A.A: ‘My husband Aws bin As-Samit pronounced the words: ‘You are like a mother to me’. So I came to the Porphet S.A.S complaining to him about my husband. The Messenger of Allah S.A.S disputed with me and said ‘Remain dutiful to Allah, he is your cousin’. I continued complaining until the Quranic verse came down : Allah has heard the words of her who disputes with you concerning her husband .. (Al-Mujaadalah (58):1) till the prescription of expaition. He then said, ‘He should set a slave free’. She said, ‘He cannot afford it’.He then said, ‘He should fast for two consecutive months’. She said, ‘Messenger of Allah S.A.S he is an old man; he cannot keep fasts. he said ‘He should then feed sixty poor people’. She said, ‘He has nothing with which he may give in alms’. At that moment an Araq (basket containing sixty Sa’s of dates) was brought to him. I said, ‘I shall help him with another date-basket. He said ‘You have done well. Go and feed sixty poor people on his behalf and return to your cousin’. (Abu Dawood)

Kaffarah for Violating Hajj: Allah S.W.T says: ‘And perform properly, the Hajj and the Umrah for Allah, But if you are prevented (from completing them), sacrifice a Hady(animal i.e. sheep, a cow, a camel etc) such as you can afford, and do not shave your heads until the Hady reaches the place of sacrifice. And whoever of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp (necessiating shaving), he must pay a Fidyah (ransom) of either observing Sawm (fast – three days) or giving Sadaqah (charity – feeding 6 poor people) or offering sacrifice (one sheep)…’. (Al-Baraqah (2):196)

Kafaarah of hunting while in Ihram or sacred places: Allah says: O you who believe! Kill not game when you are in a state of Ihram for Hajj or Umrah and whoever of you kills it intentionally, the penalty is offering, brought to Ka’bah of an eatable animal equivalent to the one he killed as adjusted by two just men among you; for expiation, he should feed Muskimeen or its equivalent in Sawmm that he may taste the heaviness (punishment) of his deed. Allah has forgiven what is past, but whoever commits it again; Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is All-Mighty, All Able Of Retribution‘ (Al-Maa’idah (5):95)

Allah S.W.T is great, the most merciful and bountiful. May Allah help safeguard us all against shaitan’s ill whisperings and his plots and make us all do deeds acceptable of Islam and follow the path described in Quran and followed by Prophet S.A.S. Ameen.

Allah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His permission He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great (Surah Al-Baqara # 255)

This is Ayat Al-Kursi and tremendous virtues have been associated with it, for the authentic Hadith describes it as `the greatest Ayah in the Book of Allah.’ Imam Ahmad recorded that the Prophet commented on this Ayat,‘By He in Whose Hand is my soul! This Ayah has a tongue and two lips with which she praises the King (Allah) next to the leg of the Throne.’

Further, Ibn Marduwyah recorded that Abu Umamah reported that the Prophet said, ‘Allah’s Greatest Name, if He was supplicated with it, He answers the supplication, is in three Surahs – Al-Baqarah, Al `Imran and Ta-Ha’. Hisham bin `Ammar, the Khatib (orator) of Damascus (one of the narrators in the above narration), said, “As for Al-Baqarah, it is in, ‘Allah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists‘ (# 255); in Al `Imran, it is in, ‘Alif-Lam-Mim. Allah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists‘ (# 1-2),  while in Ta-Ha, it is in, ‘And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allah), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists‘ ( # 111)

It is recorded in the Sahih that Abu Musa said, “The Messenger of Allah delivered a speech regarding four words (Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him): ‘Allah does not sleep, and it does not befit His majesty that He sleeps. He lowers the scales and raises them. The deeds of the day are resurrected in front of Him before the deeds of the night, and the deeds of the night before the deeds of the day. His Veil is light, or fire, and if He removes it, the rays from His Face would burn whatever His sight reaches of His creation.’

Waki` narrated in his Tafsir that Ibn `Abbas said, “Kursi is the footstool, and no one is able to give due consideration to [Allah’s] Throne.” In addition, Ad-Dahhak said that Ibn `Abbas said, “If the seven heavens and the seven earths were flattened and laid side by side, they would add up to the size of a ring in a desert, compared to the Kursi’
