It is mostly encouraged that good deeds be followed by bad deeds, more appropriately that the good deeds be of the same nature as the bad deeds, for that is the most effective in cancellation. Now, such a statement does not encourage bad deeds but rather consoles that the bad deeds can be erased off by good deeds. Imagine  a situation where a person wronged himself/herself in the eyes of Allah by committing a sin, what now? How would the person recompensated for the sin? Make no mistake, for it can be done; through the following things –

I) Tawbah: Tawbah meaning repentance, is an act of seeking forgiveness of Allah S.W.T from a sin or sins (major) committed through the fulfillment of certain condition as follows:

  • An immediate stop to the committing of the sinful act(s).
  • A genuine regret, from the heart, at committing the sinful act(s).
  • Have a firm intention/resolve not to repeat the act of sin(s).
  • If the act of sin is related to violating the rights of another person, then redress the compensation of the damage/loss inflicted on that person. Example: If a person stole something from someone, the repentance is not complete until he returns the stolen goods to the rightful owner
  • Repentance must be before the time of death, if it to be accepted.

II) Istighfaar:Istighfaar meaning seeking forgiveness, is a way of asking Allah S.W.T for pardon for a minor or a major sin committed without necessarily fulfilling the conditions stated above. Istighfaar could also be done without repentance, for Allah does forgive in answer to one’s supplication even if he has not repented; however if repentance and forgiveness are combined then such a situation is ideal.

III) Good and correct actions which are Kaffaarat: Kafaaraat means expiation of sins. The kaffaarat is of two types

  • Specified Kaffaarat: These are the actions on which Sharee’ah has fixed an expiation. Examples of such Kaffaraat are those for committing intercourse while fasting in Ramadaan, for saying to one’s wife, ‘You are like a mother to me’, for violating certain prohibitions during Hajj or leaving some of its obligations or for killing game in Haram. All of these have established alloted ways to expiate sins, of four types: sacrifice, freeing a slave, charity and fasting.
  • General Kaffaraat: Hudhaifa R.A.A said to Umar R.A.A: ‘Fitnah (afflictions) are caused to a man due to his family, wealth and children; so prayer, fasting, charity, enjoying goodness and forbidding evil wipes this out. Also, five daily prayers, Friday prayer, fasting, Hajj and other actions expiate sin, regarding which it is said, ‘whoever says such-and-such or does such-and-such then he is forgiven or his previous sins are forgiven.

I will inshallah expand further on Specified and General Kaffaraat in the next part of this post since my aim is to distribute knowledge such that the interest of reading something isnt altered by the length of the post.

The mother of Maryam was wife of `Imran, and her name was Hannah bint Faqudh. Muhammad bin Ishaq mentioned that Hannah could not have children and that one day, she saw a bird feeding its chick. She wished she could have children and supplicated to Allah to grant her offspring. Allah accepted her supplication, and when her husband slept with her, she became pregnant. She vowed to make her child concentrate on worship and serving Bayt Al-Maqdis (the Masjid in Jerusalem), when she became aware that she was pregnant she said, “O my Lord! I have vowed to You what is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services, so accept this from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing” (Surah Al-Imran, #35) meaning, You hear my supplication and You know my intention. She did not know then what she would give birth to, a male or a female. ‘Then when she gave birth to her, she said: “O my Lord! I have given birth to a female child, ـ and Allah knew better what she bore. And the male is not like the female“. in strength and the commitment to worship Allah and serve the Masjid in Jerusalem. “And I have named her Maryam” (#36)

Allah states that He has accepted Maryam as a result of her mother’s vow and that ‘He made her grow in a good manner‘ meaning, made her conduct becoming, her mannerism delightful and He made her well liked among people. He also made her accompany the righteous people, so that she learned righteousness, knowledge and religion. ‘And put her under the care of Zakariyya’ meaning, Allah made Zakariyya her sponsor. Allah made Zakariyya Maryam’s guardian for her benefit, so that she would learn from his tremendous knowledge and righteous conduct. He was the husband of her maternal aunt, as Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Jarir stated.

Allah then emphasizes Maryam’s honor and virtue at the place of worship she attended, ‘Every time he entered the Mihrab to (visit) her, he found her supplied with sustenance’, meaning he would find with her the fruits of the summer during winter, and the fruits of the winter during summer.’When Zakariyya would see this; He said: “O Maryam! From where have you gotten this” meaning, where did you get these fruits from ? She said, “This is from Allah.” Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit’. (# 37)

Ibn Jarir recorded that `Ikrimah said, “Maryam’s mother left with Maryam, carrying her in her infant cloth, and took her to the rabbis from the offspring of Aaron, the brother of Musa. They were responsible for taking care of Bayt Al-Maqdis (the Masjid) at that time, just as there were those who took care of the Ka`bah. Maryam’s mother said to them, `Take this child whom I vowed [to serve the Masjid], I have set her free, since she is my daughter, for no menstruating woman should enter the Masjid, and I shall not take her back home.’ They said, `She is the daughter of our Imam,’ as `Imran used to lead them in prayer, `who took care of our sacrificial rituals.’ Zakariyya said, `Give her to me, for her maternal aunt is my wife.’ They said, `Our hearts cannot bear that you take her, for she is the daughter of our Imam.’ So they conducted a lottery with the pens with which they wrote the Tawrah, and Zakariyya won the lottery and took Maryam into his care.”’. `Ikrimah, As-Suddi, Qatadah, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas, and several others said that the rabbis went into the Jordan river and conducted a lottery there, deciding to throw their pens into the river. The pen that remained afloat and idle would indicate that its owner would take care of Maryam. When they threw their pens into the river, the water took all the pens under, except Zakariyya’s pen, which remained afloat in its place. Zakariyya was also their master, chief, scholar, Imam and Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be on him and the rest of the Prophets.

Masjid-Al-Haram: (Picture source)

Once again Mahsallah its that time of the year when Muslims all over the globe are bonded together by the unseen thread of deity and worship. Its now in the month of Ramadan that Allah S.W.T’s mercy takes over his anger, the gates of Jannah (Paradise) are widely opened and the gates of Hell are closed; Iblis (Satan) is chained, no more allowed to pester believers with his evil whisperings.

It is believed that when a fasting believer supplicates to Allah S.W.T with pure heart and sheer dedication, his dua will be accepted by Allah S.W.T. Fasting does not just correspond to staying away from food and ill habits; but to gain a self control over oneself which is always encouraged and needed in Islam. As long as a believer fasts, he/she should absorb himself in Zikr of Allah S.W.T, in recitation and remembrance of Allah S.W.T with a humble heart.

Understanding the fact that blessed are we to live through yet an other month of mercy, we should try to gain as much as we can out of it. Seek forgiveness for yourself, as well as for your loved ones; ask for a better life here and in the hereafter; Beg for strength and courage; pray for good health and happiness; call for strong relations build solely on love; ask for pious and humble children; beseech for respect and humbleness and lastly, remember all your Muslim friends in your prayers.

Ramadan Mubarak .. wishing you all a blessed Ramadan !!!

A little something for those interested in knowing more about Ramadan and fasting. Attached is a booklet created by a sister in hopes of reaching more and more Muslims; May Allah bless her for her effort Ameen

The basic form of purification for prayer is called Wudu (ablution) which is encouraged to begin with uttering of ‘Bismillah’ (In the name of Allah) followed by Niyat (intention) to purify yourself in the heart.

Step 1: While making the intention for Wudu, pour water on your both palms and wash those up to the wrist and run finger through the fingers, by making sure that no part of hand remains dry.

Step 2: Rinse mouth thoroughly, then inhale water into the nose with your right hand and clean it with your left hand.

Step 3: Wash the face completely, making sure no part of the face remains dry. In length wash from the above part of the forehead to the below of the chin. And in width wash your face from the root of ear to the root of other ears.

Step 4: Wash your right hand including the elbow, again making sure no part of the hand remains dry. Then the same is done with the left hand.

Step 5: Wipe both your wet hands over your head, from front (forehead) to the back (nape of the neck) and from back to the front.

Step 6: Wipe inside of your both ears with your index finger and outside of both ears with your thumb finger.

Step 7: First wash your right foot thoroughly including the ankles and run finger through the fingers of foot with little finger of left hand from above to below, making sure that no part of the foot including the ankles is left dry. Repeat the same with the left foot.

*All actions of Wudu (exceot for wiping of the head and the ears) may be performed 1,2 or 3 times*

Dua after Wudu: Ashhadu ‘an la ‘ilaha ‘illallahu wahdahi la shareeka lahu, wa ‘ashhadu ‘annu Muhammadan abduhu wa rasooluhu. Allahummaj alni minat-tawwabeena waj’alni minal-mutatahhireen. (I testify that there is no diety worthy of worship except Allah alone and that Muhammad S.A.S is his slave and his Messenger. O Allah! Make me among those who repent and make me among those who keep themselves pure)

What nullifies Wudu: 1. Passing wind, urine, excrement

2.Deep sleep

3. Touching private parts without any cover

4. Eating camel’s meat

5. Loss of ones senses due to fainting or madness

All praises are due on Allah, of whom we are just humble servants.

Uzayr, a man from the Children of Israel was walking through the village of Jerusalem after Nebuchadnezzar destroyed it and killed its people, the roofs and walls of the houses of which were crumbled down to the ground. `Uzayr stood contemplating about what had happened to that city, after a great civilization used to inhabit it. He said, ‘Oh! How will Allah ever bring it to life after its death‘ (Surah Al Bakara # 258) because of the utter destruction he saw and the implausibility of its returning to what it used to be. Allah said, ‘So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again)‘ (#259)

The city was rebuilt seventy years after the man (`Uzayr) died, and its inhabitants increased and the Children of Israel moved back to it. When Allah resurrected `Uzayr after he died, the first organ that He resurrected were his eyes, so that he could witness what Allah does with him, how He brings life back to his body. When his resurrection was complete, Allah said to him, meaning through the angel, ‘How long did you remain (dead)” He (the man) said: “(Perhaps) I remained (dead) a day or part of a day‘. (#259)

The scholars said that since the man died in the early part of the day and Allah resurrected him in the latter part of the day, when he saw that the sun was still apparent, he thought that it was the sun of that very day. He said, ‘Or part of a day. ” He said: ‘Nay, you have remained (dead) for a hundred years, look at your food and your drink, they show no change.’ (# 259).He had grapes, figs and juice, and he found them as he left them; neither did the juice spoil nor the figs become bitter nor the grapes rot. ‘And look at your donkey!’ (# 259), “How Allah brings it back to life while you are watching’. ‘ And thus We have made of you a sign for the people that Resurrection occurs’ (# 259).

`Uzayr observed the bones of his donkey, which were scattered all around him to his right and left, and Allah sent a wind that collected the bones from all over the area. Allah then brought every bone to its place, until they formed a full donkey made of fleshless bones. Allah then covered these bones with flesh, nerves, veins and skin. Allah sent an angel who blew life in the donkeys’ nostrils, and the donkey started to bray by Allah’s leave.” All this occurred while `Uzayr was watching, and this is when he proclaimed, ‘He said, “I know (now) that Allah is able to do all things‘ (# 259) meaning, “I know that, and I did witness it with my own eyes. Therefore, I am the most knowledgeable in this matter among the people of my time.”

We all believe Allah is capable of such, but reading so still sends chills. Doesnt it ? All praise are due on Allah, The Almighty, The Merciful.

In recent times, have come across many sites talking about how women are exploited and are burdened by laws laid down by Islam. I was ashamed reading them, mostly because I myself am a woman, a strong willed dare I say. Islam is the purest of all religions, the true one indeed, all the believers of which are to assured of them being justified no matter what before Allah if they are/were truthful. ‘How then, are women such-and-such’ was the first thought that evaded my sleep and peace. It cannot be, just cannot be. Allah cannot burden women as claimed by some, He created women with the same hands he created men with, He breathed soul in them just as he did to men, He will decide their eternal fate just as he will of men. Why then, this claim ?

I had to find evidence, to help both me and all the women of the shameful life they must have had led out of such claims. Even the western world declares that men and women are different from each other, Although sharing the same biological name ‘Homo-sapiens’ their similarities end right there. We don’t mind much when the western world says so, do we ? Only when Muslims claim the same, we are considered to have a religion which is partial to men?

A woman of Islam is said to cover herself up from the eyes of stranger men. One way, the rightful way of saying that is a woman is a precious gem, the entitlement of which is only given to her parents and husband. She hides her beauty from hungry eyes and opens up only for her husband. But, the other (evil) way of looking at it is that a woman of Islam is denied the same existence as men of roaming freely without a black cloth covering him head to toe. And sadly, that’s the way world looks at it. Think hard, When a christian nun covers the same body parts as a Muslimah, she is praised for her rightfulness and devotion to her lord, I bet you the same is felt whenever their eyes sees a Muslimah ??!!

In Islam, a woman is allowed to choose a husband of her liking as long as he himself is a believer. If she is forced into marrying someone not of her choice, she possess the right to dissolve the marriage and marry by her choice. Ponder awhile, which religion gives such a right to women ? My Islam does.

Whatever money a woman makes as long as it is by lawful means, she alone  secures the right to spend it the way of her choosing. Although married, she remains the rightful owner of her money, not a penny of which can be taken without her permission. If she wishes to spend her money doing such-and-such as long as its done in halal way, she needn’t seek her husband permission nor content. Wouldnt that be accounted for freedom people ??

These are to name a few of the privileges Islam bestows on women. I strongly urge every women out there to make peace with the fact that we aren’t the same as men, We are given some rights over men just as men are given some over us, but the essence of our creation remains the same. Perform good deeds, competing for reward from Allah and targeting Jannah as the main goal of our lives. A woman is just as same as a man, but a man is given a degree of authority over us. Islam doesn’t asks a man to rule over his woman, but it is rather inferred by some of men. The certain degree of authority granted to them over us is much misused than respected, the result of which can be seen and heard quite often in the society.

Islam does not allow neither does it encourage such acts. It is onto men of today to take the responsibility to correct the picture of men in Islam and give women their due respect. In hope we abide therein !!!
