Collected and written below are some of the ways through which few sins can be expatiated against. These dua’s confirm to the fact that Islam is the easiest religion to follow, wherein a person having committed a sea full of sins still is given a hope of entering Jannah (Paradise) by reciting a few Quranic verses or dua’s with heart-felt regret , shame and Imaan (faith) in Allah’s promise.
Please note that this is a continuation of my earlier post on actions that may help in forgiveness of sins committed by a person. And that Kafaarah translates to expatiation.

Kaffaarah for committing sexual intercourse while fasting in Ramadhan: Narrated by Abu Hurairah R.A.A: ‘While we were sitting with the prophet S.A.S a man came and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! I have been ruined.’ Prophet S.A.S asked what was the matter with him. He replied ‘I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting’ Prophet S.A.S asked him, ‘Can you afford to manumit a slave?’ He replied in negative. Prophet S.A.S then asked ‘ Can you fast for two consecutive months?’ He replied in negative. The Prophet S.A.S asked ‘ Can you afford to feed 60 poor people?’ He replied in negative again. The Prophet S.A.S remained silent for a while and while he was in his stake, a big basket full of dates was brought to Prophet S.A.S. He asked ‘Where is the questioner?’ He replied, ‘I am here’. The Prophet S.A.S said ‘Take this and give in charity’. The man said ‘Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between Madinah’s two mountains who are poorer than I’. The Prophet S.A.S smiled and replied, ‘Feed your family with it’. (Bukhari)

Kaffaraah of Zihar: Narrated by Khuwalyah, daughter of Malik bin Tha’labah R.A.A: ‘My husband Aws bin As-Samit pronounced the words: ‘You are like a mother to me’. So I came to the Porphet S.A.S complaining to him about my husband. The Messenger of Allah S.A.S disputed with me and said ‘Remain dutiful to Allah, he is your cousin’. I continued complaining until the Quranic verse came down : Allah has heard the words of her who disputes with you concerning her husband .. (Al-Mujaadalah (58):1) till the prescription of expaition. He then said, ‘He should set a slave free’. She said, ‘He cannot afford it’.He then said, ‘He should fast for two consecutive months’. She said, ‘Messenger of Allah S.A.S he is an old man; he cannot keep fasts. he said ‘He should then feed sixty poor people’. She said, ‘He has nothing with which he may give in alms’. At that moment an Araq (basket containing sixty Sa’s of dates) was brought to him. I said, ‘I shall help him with another date-basket. He said ‘You have done well. Go and feed sixty poor people on his behalf and return to your cousin’. (Abu Dawood)

Kaffarah for Violating Hajj: Allah S.W.T says: ‘And perform properly, the Hajj and the Umrah for Allah, But if you are prevented (from completing them), sacrifice a Hady(animal i.e. sheep, a cow, a camel etc) such as you can afford, and do not shave your heads until the Hady reaches the place of sacrifice. And whoever of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp (necessiating shaving), he must pay a Fidyah (ransom) of either observing Sawm (fast – three days) or giving Sadaqah (charity – feeding 6 poor people) or offering sacrifice (one sheep)…’. (Al-Baraqah (2):196)

Kafaarah of hunting while in Ihram or sacred places: Allah says: O you who believe! Kill not game when you are in a state of Ihram for Hajj or Umrah and whoever of you kills it intentionally, the penalty is offering, brought to Ka’bah of an eatable animal equivalent to the one he killed as adjusted by two just men among you; for expiation, he should feed Muskimeen or its equivalent in Sawmm that he may taste the heaviness (punishment) of his deed. Allah has forgiven what is past, but whoever commits it again; Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is All-Mighty, All Able Of Retribution‘ (Al-Maa’idah (5):95)

Allah S.W.T is great, the most merciful and bountiful. May Allah help safeguard us all against shaitan’s ill whisperings and his plots and make us all do deeds acceptable of Islam and follow the path described in Quran and followed by Prophet S.A.S. Ameen.

It is mostly encouraged that good deeds be followed by bad deeds, more appropriately that the good deeds be of the same nature as the bad deeds, for that is the most effective in cancellation. Now, such a statement does not encourage bad deeds but rather consoles that the bad deeds can be erased off by good deeds. Imagine  a situation where a person wronged himself/herself in the eyes of Allah by committing a sin, what now? How would the person recompensated for the sin? Make no mistake, for it can be done; through the following things –

I) Tawbah: Tawbah meaning repentance, is an act of seeking forgiveness of Allah S.W.T from a sin or sins (major) committed through the fulfillment of certain condition as follows:

  • An immediate stop to the committing of the sinful act(s).
  • A genuine regret, from the heart, at committing the sinful act(s).
  • Have a firm intention/resolve not to repeat the act of sin(s).
  • If the act of sin is related to violating the rights of another person, then redress the compensation of the damage/loss inflicted on that person. Example: If a person stole something from someone, the repentance is not complete until he returns the stolen goods to the rightful owner
  • Repentance must be before the time of death, if it to be accepted.

II) Istighfaar:Istighfaar meaning seeking forgiveness, is a way of asking Allah S.W.T for pardon for a minor or a major sin committed without necessarily fulfilling the conditions stated above. Istighfaar could also be done without repentance, for Allah does forgive in answer to one’s supplication even if he has not repented; however if repentance and forgiveness are combined then such a situation is ideal.

III) Good and correct actions which are Kaffaarat: Kafaaraat means expiation of sins. The kaffaarat is of two types

  • Specified Kaffaarat: These are the actions on which Sharee’ah has fixed an expiation. Examples of such Kaffaraat are those for committing intercourse while fasting in Ramadaan, for saying to one’s wife, ‘You are like a mother to me’, for violating certain prohibitions during Hajj or leaving some of its obligations or for killing game in Haram. All of these have established alloted ways to expiate sins, of four types: sacrifice, freeing a slave, charity and fasting.
  • General Kaffaraat: Hudhaifa R.A.A said to Umar R.A.A: ‘Fitnah (afflictions) are caused to a man due to his family, wealth and children; so prayer, fasting, charity, enjoying goodness and forbidding evil wipes this out. Also, five daily prayers, Friday prayer, fasting, Hajj and other actions expiate sin, regarding which it is said, ‘whoever says such-and-such or does such-and-such then he is forgiven or his previous sins are forgiven.

I will inshallah expand further on Specified and General Kaffaraat in the next part of this post since my aim is to distribute knowledge such that the interest of reading something isnt altered by the length of the post.

Salaam alaikum World,

Just a small reminder for everyone out there that I am finally going to be back pretty soon, agreed it had been a long absence but a rather eventful one dare I say.  Saw life through a different lens, understood greatly the gravity of Allah’s power over us humans – all just in a matter of few days!

Ending on a wonderful note – An email this morning made my Jummah even more wonderful, Was it due to some wacky December deals ?? Nay! Its the pleasure I felt to learn that MSA at UTSC has rightfully guided Christy (name changed to protect privacy) a Chinese christian back to where she belonged – Islam. Mashallah!

Our beloved prophet S.A.S was granted many miracles from Allah S.W.T, some of which are as follows:

1. The Holy Quran was the living miracle bestowed on our Prophet S.A.S by Allah and this Allah’s book was revealed to him through Ruh-ul-Quddus (Jibrael). Today 1400 years have passed and no one have been able to change a single letter or produce is imitation as mentioned in the Holy Quran (Surah Hijr V.15:9) and the statement of Prophet S.A.S, “Before me, every Prophet was given a miracle and they practiced it during their lifetime: like Isa (Jesus) was given the miracle of curing sick people and bringing the dead to life etc, Musa (Moses) was given the stick etc and I have been given the permanent miracle of Quran till the hour is established, so I hope that my followers will be more than all the other messengers as my miracle will last till the Day or Resurrection, and It is a glorious book; when anyone reads it, even if he is a pagan he is convinced that it is produced by none but by the Creator of Heavens and Earth.”

2. The splitting of the moon: Narrated Anas R.A.A that the Meccans requested Allah’s Messenger S.A.S to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon (Sahih Al-Bukhari: Vol 4, Hadith # 831)

3. The crying of the stem of the date palm tree in the Prophet S.A.S’s mosque: Narrated Ibn Umar R.A.A that the prophet S.A.S used to deliver his Khutba while leaning against the trunk of the date palm tree. When he had the pulpit made and used it instead, the truck started crying and the Prophet S.A.S went to it, rubbing his hand over it to stop its crying (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol 4, Hadith # 783)

4. The flowing of water from among the fingers of Allah’s Messenger S.A.S: (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol 4, Hadith # 779). Narrated Jabar bin Abdullah R.A.A: I was with Prophet S.A.S and the time for the Asr prayers became due. We had no water with us except a little which was put in a vessel and was brought  to the Prophet S.A.S. He kept his hand into it and spread out his fingers and then said, ‘ Come along! Hurry up! All those who want to perform ablution. The blessing is from Allah.” I saw the water gushing out from his fingers. So the people performed the ablution and drank, and I tried to drink more of the water (beyond my thirst and capacity), for I knew it was a blessing. The subnarrator said: I asked Jabir, ‘How many persons were you then?’ He replied, ‘We were One thousand four hundred men’ (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol 7, Hadith # 543)

5. The Prophet’s meals used to glorify Allah when he ate and this glorificatin was heard by the companions of the Prophet S.A.S (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol 4, Hadith #779)

6. The screening (shading) by the trees, for the Prophet S.A.S to answer the call of nature.

The mother of Maryam was wife of `Imran, and her name was Hannah bint Faqudh. Muhammad bin Ishaq mentioned that Hannah could not have children and that one day, she saw a bird feeding its chick. She wished she could have children and supplicated to Allah to grant her offspring. Allah accepted her supplication, and when her husband slept with her, she became pregnant. She vowed to make her child concentrate on worship and serving Bayt Al-Maqdis (the Masjid in Jerusalem), when she became aware that she was pregnant she said, “O my Lord! I have vowed to You what is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services, so accept this from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing” (Surah Al-Imran, #35) meaning, You hear my supplication and You know my intention. She did not know then what she would give birth to, a male or a female. ‘Then when she gave birth to her, she said: “O my Lord! I have given birth to a female child, ـ and Allah knew better what she bore. And the male is not like the female“. in strength and the commitment to worship Allah and serve the Masjid in Jerusalem. “And I have named her Maryam” (#36)

Allah states that He has accepted Maryam as a result of her mother’s vow and that ‘He made her grow in a good manner‘ meaning, made her conduct becoming, her mannerism delightful and He made her well liked among people. He also made her accompany the righteous people, so that she learned righteousness, knowledge and religion. ‘And put her under the care of Zakariyya’ meaning, Allah made Zakariyya her sponsor. Allah made Zakariyya Maryam’s guardian for her benefit, so that she would learn from his tremendous knowledge and righteous conduct. He was the husband of her maternal aunt, as Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Jarir stated.

Allah then emphasizes Maryam’s honor and virtue at the place of worship she attended, ‘Every time he entered the Mihrab to (visit) her, he found her supplied with sustenance’, meaning he would find with her the fruits of the summer during winter, and the fruits of the winter during summer.’When Zakariyya would see this; He said: “O Maryam! From where have you gotten this” meaning, where did you get these fruits from ? She said, “This is from Allah.” Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit’. (# 37)

Ibn Jarir recorded that `Ikrimah said, “Maryam’s mother left with Maryam, carrying her in her infant cloth, and took her to the rabbis from the offspring of Aaron, the brother of Musa. They were responsible for taking care of Bayt Al-Maqdis (the Masjid) at that time, just as there were those who took care of the Ka`bah. Maryam’s mother said to them, `Take this child whom I vowed [to serve the Masjid], I have set her free, since she is my daughter, for no menstruating woman should enter the Masjid, and I shall not take her back home.’ They said, `She is the daughter of our Imam,’ as `Imran used to lead them in prayer, `who took care of our sacrificial rituals.’ Zakariyya said, `Give her to me, for her maternal aunt is my wife.’ They said, `Our hearts cannot bear that you take her, for she is the daughter of our Imam.’ So they conducted a lottery with the pens with which they wrote the Tawrah, and Zakariyya won the lottery and took Maryam into his care.”’. `Ikrimah, As-Suddi, Qatadah, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas, and several others said that the rabbis went into the Jordan river and conducted a lottery there, deciding to throw their pens into the river. The pen that remained afloat and idle would indicate that its owner would take care of Maryam. When they threw their pens into the river, the water took all the pens under, except Zakariyya’s pen, which remained afloat in its place. Zakariyya was also their master, chief, scholar, Imam and Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be on him and the rest of the Prophets.

Masjid-Al-Haram: (Picture source)

Once again Mahsallah its that time of the year when Muslims all over the globe are bonded together by the unseen thread of deity and worship. Its now in the month of Ramadan that Allah S.W.T’s mercy takes over his anger, the gates of Jannah (Paradise) are widely opened and the gates of Hell are closed; Iblis (Satan) is chained, no more allowed to pester believers with his evil whisperings.

It is believed that when a fasting believer supplicates to Allah S.W.T with pure heart and sheer dedication, his dua will be accepted by Allah S.W.T. Fasting does not just correspond to staying away from food and ill habits; but to gain a self control over oneself which is always encouraged and needed in Islam. As long as a believer fasts, he/she should absorb himself in Zikr of Allah S.W.T, in recitation and remembrance of Allah S.W.T with a humble heart.

Understanding the fact that blessed are we to live through yet an other month of mercy, we should try to gain as much as we can out of it. Seek forgiveness for yourself, as well as for your loved ones; ask for a better life here and in the hereafter; Beg for strength and courage; pray for good health and happiness; call for strong relations build solely on love; ask for pious and humble children; beseech for respect and humbleness and lastly, remember all your Muslim friends in your prayers.

Ramadan Mubarak .. wishing you all a blessed Ramadan !!!

A little something for those interested in knowing more about Ramadan and fasting. Attached is a booklet created by a sister in hopes of reaching more and more Muslims; May Allah bless her for her effort Ameen
